The Amrut Sanitation Project engages with the villages of Pedhamali, Amiyapur and Vantal to foster a culture in the villages of healthy sanitation habits, specifically in the areas of personal hygiene and the use of toilets. There is also an emphasis on changing waste disposal habits. We believe that by seeding values and awareness in the practices and habits of sanitation, community empowerment will naturally spring forth. The Amrut Sanitation Project is an experiment to develop these villages into ‘model villages’ through extensive interaction at multiple levels. The intention is to collectively foster a transformation in each others’ hearts and minds, in order to make the practice of hygiene and sanitation self-sustaining. In turn, these villages will be examples for other villages, and sustainable sanitation and hygienic lifestyles will naturally spread by word-of-mouth from village to village.
